The braids are very similar to our Loony Braids tutorial that has been very popular on YouTube, but instead of braiding with one large strand and two smaller strands… these textured braids are made reversed with “one small strand” and “two larger strands”.

The added pullback I created on CGH#3 here is optional, and if you choose to use it, you will need to bobby pin it to be sure it covers the third braid…

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 3 small hair elastics, 1-2 bobby pins and hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 5 minutes

Skill Level: Medium

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Begin by taking the top section {crown area} of hair and pulling it towards the back of head {make sure to leave about 1 inch of hair above each ear that should not be pulled back}…
2. Now, braid this section using a lopsided braid, meaning two regular strands and one small strand.
3. When you are done with this braid secure with an elastic and pancake {pull out} the elbows of the braid to add texture and shape to the braid…
4. Now, pick up a section of hair on the right side and repeat another lopsided braid . Try to use a section similar in size to the first braid {do not grab the front section over the right ear into this braid}…
5. When braid is done, secure ends with an elastic and pancake the edges as you did in Step #3.
6. Now take the edges of hair over both ears, and a little hair from the left side of original braid to create a third braid of the left side.  You should be pulling the hair over the right ear across the top of the original braid.  This just adds a little extra texture and uniqueness to the braids…
7. Create the third braid and secure end with an elastic.  Pancake the elbows for added emphasis.  {Optional: Create the third braid  without crossing the hair from the right over both braids}.

For today's hairstyle tutorial, we have combined 2 techniques (afeather braid and a chain) to create 2 fun new styles.

The first hair style (shown in the photos above and below) does not require french braiding skills. Yay! If you can do a standard 3 strand feather braid and tie a simple knot, you can do this.  The Princess commented that these braids tied together draping at the back of her head remind her of a fancy lace wedding veil! I have to agree, and can see this working as a bridal hairstyle, or for a flower girl. This style also has a medieval, renaissance, princessy feel to it.

We both love this hairdo, but I would recommend using it only for "low activity" days.  As I'm sure most of you have found, any hairstyle which uses braids laying over the head and connected at the back usually ends up with the hair underneath (and above the braids) trying to escape, tangle, and pop up!  We usually save styles like this for church and other special occasions.

This second hairstyle idea (shown below) is quicker to make and will hold up much better, but does require some french braiding skills (or lace braiding to be exact.) As the princess is now a "tween" she loves half up styles, as they seem more grown up to her.  I love that the chains add a cute twist to a classic lace braid style. Something unique and a little different is always fun!  I'm thinking adding a few curls to the ends of her hair would be really pretty and add a finishing touch to the hairstyles as well.

P.S. Please excuse her damp hair in these pictures.  Both of these styles would obviously look better with dry hair, but we didn't have time to wait for her hair to dry before taking these pics, as we were headed out. ;) We started with wet hair in the first place because the chains are much easier to make while the hair is wet.  Depending on your hair texture, you could try wet hair, or add some product such as gel or pomade before you begin.
